Connemara marble is over 900 Million years old and is unique to Ireland. We own and operate the oldest marble quarry, which was first opened in the 19th Century. The marble is sawn into manageable size blocks with diamond wire and removed with a Derrick crane due to it's weight and size.
This famous decorative stone is known throughout the world. Formerly lime mud sediment deposited on a shallow sea floor around 650-750 million years ago though high temperatures and pressure. The distinctive layers created by different minerals in the rock mean that every piece of jewelry crafted is unique in its own way.
The only remaining quarry in operation is located at Barnanoraun in Connemara, County Galway where the stone is extracted for the world market by Irish Connemara Marble. This mine has been running since 1822 and has been supplying Connemara Marble worldwide for over 3 generations.
Connemara Marble is easily identifiable and has been used in iconic buildings worldwide including the Galway Cathedral, the walls of the Senate Chamber of the state building in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania as well as in Westminster Cathedral and Oxford University’s Museum of Natural History.
